Project: Forcing Bulbs

Grow It! : Episode GRW-202 -- More Projects »
Forcing bulbs is a wonderful way to get flowers to bloom before they would naturally. Paperwhites are easy to force, smell great and will enliven any room of the house. Here's how to proceed:
  • Purchase the biggest bulbs possible.
  • Water the clay pot before planting; clay pots wick water away from the soil.
  • Place a handful of compost in the pot, then fill about halfway with a potting-soil-and-sand mixture (about half of each). Sink the bulbs very close together in the pot. Top with the potting-soil mixture and leave the top 1/3 of the bulbs uncovered. Fertilize, but sprinkle only a few grains on top of the soil. Then water very well.
  • Put the pot in a darkened garage at a temperature of about 50 degrees.
  • One month later, bring the pot into the house and place in a cool, sunny spot. In a few weeks you'll have beautiful flowers for the darkest days of winter.
