For best effect, plant acidanthera in large groups.
Acidanthera, or peacock orchid (Acidanthera bicolor), is a tropical, but it will grow in northern climates if it's dug up and brought inside for the winter. Pretty white flowers bloom atop 18-inch stalks from mid-summer through fall. Plant acidanthera a week or two before the average last frost date in your area.

Acidanthera bulbs are stunning when planted in clusters of 10 to 25. Dig a hole three inches deep and wide enough to accommodate the number of bulbs you plan to plant, then place them four inches apart. For heavier clay soils, plant the bulbs only 1-1/2 inches deep. Cover the bulbs with soil; water thoroughly. To prevent the bulbs from rotting, be sure to plant in well-drained soil. In northern climates, dig up the bulbs at the end of the season, store indoors for the winter, and plant them again in the spring.
