Bring the Outdoors In

Inside Dirt : Episode ISD-111 -- More Projects »
The Inside Dirt visited the home of botanical illustrator Priscilla Baldwin in Evergreen, Colorado, to see how she creates natural transitions between her plants and her home. She designed her garden and home in such a way that she can be in part of the garden all the time.

Her home is U-shaped, with glass walls that unite rather than separate the inside from the outside. The result is a series of stunning illusions in which it's difficult to tell whether a houseplant is reflected in the glass or has a twin on the other side.

Baldwin chooses her plants for their height, fullness and texture. "I think living things add warmth to any living space," she says. Another design trick she uses is to incorporate hardscape elements inside her home. For instance, rock walls and even boulders intersect glass walls.

One challenge: The glass walls in her home are specially made to screen out as much as 90 percent of the UV light, which means the plants she uses indoors must be able to tolerate low light conditions.

All you need is a window to create the natural effects Baldwin strives for. "You can do window boxes inside and outside, and all you have in between is a window."
