Winter Bulbs

Winter Gardener : Episode TWG-101 -- More Projects »
One of the best ways to add color to a winter garden is to plant bulbs such as snowdrops and crocus that bloom in the winter months. Here, get professional tips on planting and caring for all kinds of bulbs.

Materials:

  • bulbs
  • bulb food
  • watering can
  • trowel
  • drill
  • bulb auger, 9"
  • bulb auger, 24"
  • rabbit/chicken wire
  • wire cutters
  • landscape pins
  • cedar mulch

Instructions:

  • Find a site to plant bulbs.
  • Using a garden spade, dig the holes.
  • Plant bulb at proper depth according to plant directions.
  • If desired, use bulb food in the hole or around the area.
  • Cover with soil; use fertilizer if desired.
  • Place the bulb in the hole.
  • Shake soil back in the hole.
  • Using a soil auger, or small auger for minor bulbs, drill a hole where the bulb is.
  • Water thoroughly.
  • In Northern zones, place an organic mulch like cedar bark over the top to prevent constant thawing and freezing.
  • To keep wildlife out, use rabbit or chicken wire cut to the size of the garden and anchored at the edges with landscape pins. Use cedar mulch to disguise the wire. (Bulbs will be able to bloom normally with the wire in place.)
