One beautiful yet functional choice is the Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii 'Helmond Pillar'), Zones 5-9. With wonderful bronze and cranberry colored foliage throughout the growing season, this plant boasts red berries and tall branches that conceal the threatening stickers.
