Q&A: Discourage Burglary

Grow It! : Episode GRW-511 -- More Projects »
According to Seattle police, placing a thorny plant beneath a first-story window reduces the chances of being burglarized. One beautiful yet functional choice is the Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii 'Helmond Pillar'), Zones 5-9. With wonderful bronze and cranberry colored foliage throughout the growing season, this plant boasts red berries and tall branches that conceal the threatening stickers. Two additional Japanese barberry varieties are 'Rosy Glow', Zones 5-9 and 'Crimson Pygmy', Zones 5-9.
