Kristen Pategas of the Disney Institute reviews the not-so-obvious world of edible flowers. Kristen reveals several flower varieties that are part of an everyday diet, lists some of the lesser-known types of edible flowers, and shares tips on how to use these treats in popular foods.

The Rules of Edible Flowers:

1. Eat only those flowers you know are edible.

2. Eat only organically grown flowers.

3. Do not eat flowers from roadsides, florists or nurseries.

4. Don't eat flowers if you have hay fever or allergies.

5. Remove pistils and stamens; eat only the petals.

6. Introduce flowers in small doses.

Edible Flowers in the Common Diet:

  • broccoli
  • artichokes
  • chamomile

Other Edible Flowers:

  • pansies
  • nasturtiums
  • roses
  • marigolds

Suggested Uses for Edible Flowers:

  • salads
  • butter
  • cheese spreads
