Concrete stain is an easy treatment you can use on your patio, driveway, even stepping stones, to liven up areas in and around your home. Stains are available in a variety of colors from charcoal gray to brick red, can be used indoors or out, on old concrete or new. They protect against harmful elements such as salt, UV rays, water and heavy traffic, and unlike paint, stains generally won't peel, flake or fade. Here's what you do:
Start with a good sweep or vacuum (figure A). It's critical that the area you are staining is completely clean. If you're staining a driveway or garage floor, you can use a degreaser to remove oil spots before you begin.
The full-strength stain will need to be mixed with water and acid before being applied. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper dilution (figure B), and be sure to wear protective eyeglasses and clothing during this step.
Depending on the design or texture you want, use a sprayer, brush or sponge to apply the stain to the concrete (figure C). Work on one section at a time, and keep in mind that because concrete is not uniform, you may need to go back and touch up spots.
Let the area dry completely before walking or driving on it (figure D).
