Media Room and Recreation Area

Dream Home Central

The downstairs rec room in HGTV’s Winter Park Dream Home is what interior designer Linda Woodrum calls "the heart of the house," in part because it’s where she expects the home’s owners to spend a good deal of their time.

It’s easy to see why. The large, multi-purpose room is built for the comfort of a busy family, and is perfect for casual entertaining. The room seats up to 10 people, and the giant TV tucked into the wall is perfect for a movie night with friends and family. This party-friendly space even has its own kitchen to make serving guests easier.

Like the rest of the house, the rec room is decorated in browns and tans. The camel-colored walls and russet-colored, low-pile carpeting make the darker pieces pop and offset the caramel fringed throws and toss pillows.

The deep-cushioned, pale jade of the sofa provides the room’s brightest color. It folds out to sleep two comfortably, and the bedclothes can be stashed in the nearby wicker chest. A matching love seat upholstered in the same fabric faces a pair of sleek black leather club chairs across the coffee table.

And what a coffee table! Its wide, unfinished plank pine top is mounted on sturdy legs of bark-covered logs and affords plenty of room for board games or a buffet of munchies.

The stacked-stone fireplace features a mantle made from a worn wood beam and a cubbyhole that houses the room’s 72-inch wide-screen TV. While the TV is the focal point of the room, Woodrum has tucked it away so it doesn’t dominate the room’s stylish furniture and design elements.

Because a busy rec room can get cluttered, Woodrum planned for a lot of extra storage. The club chairs have a slope-sided wicker basket for a side table, perfect for storing board games and extra pillows. Behind the sofa, a trio of mesh lanterns rests on a parsons table that’s home to a pair of wicker boxes for stashing all those magazines that seem to find their way into every rec room.

The room is filled with fun, funky wildlife art. A trio of wood-carved antelope heads burst through the fireplace mantle in a humane homage to hunting lodges. Frogs, oxen and other four-legged creatures are depicted in ink prints in blacks and browns over the love seat and elsewhere throughout the room. A pine-trimmed picture ledge runs the length of the kitchen area and is perfect for displaying etchings or other objets d’art.

The fully equipped kitchenette next to the stairs has its own dishwasher, under-counter fridge and plenty of cabinets for dishware and snacks. Nearby, a round pine table is perfect for a casual meal or for a game of cards. The rush-covered seating of the ladder-back chairs is easy to clean (not to mention comfortable), as is the striking slate flooring beneath.

"If you have a home with both a living room and a family room, I think it’s important to make them very different from one another," Woodrum says. She set out to create a relaxed, come-as-you-are meeting place in the house; she succeeded with a space so comfortable and appealing that visitors may be tempted to pull out the sleeper sofa and stay awhile.
