Dock House Kitchen/Living Room

This area embodies the spirit of easy innovation and casual luxury that Dream Home 2005 exudes. Rather than French doors surrounding the kitchen and living areas, architect Antonio Flamenco insisted on something distinctly different: glass-paned garage doors, which can be thrown open to the lake breezes in an instant. And although you might expect a sink and mini-fridge in a dock house, Dream Home 2005 has a full-service kitchen with Sub-Zero fridge, dishwasher, professional stove, oven and deep-basin sink.

In Texas, everything is bigger, right? But doubly big? It is when it comes to the dock house, which has two stories, two decks, two boat slips and incalculable value. "This year's Dream Home is really two separate houses—the main house and the dock house," says house planner Jack Thomasson. "This house is of a top quality that anyone could live in."

"We thought of (the dock house) as a little floating resort out there," says Flamenco. "But in a very neat way...and we came up with these roll-up garage doors. And when those doors are open you just feel like you're unconstrained. You feel like the deck and the water is actually part of the inside living space."

The feeling of basking in warm sunlight inside the living room area of the dock house, then throwing open all three glass-panel garage doors is a dramatic rush. The effect is akin to floating on the open water, and interior designer Linda Woodrum sought to capitalize on that remarkable feeling. "We used a beautiful watery blue color on the ceiling," says Woodrum, "and that's reflected in the rug on the floor, and then we intensified that color a little bit for the cabinetry" creating a lovely package.

From a kitchen loaded with appliances comes a gorgeous stainless-steel-topped table that has casters enabling it to be wheeled straight through the garage door opening and out to guests on the expansive deck for a festive sunset supper.
