Feeling more like a resort than a house, a Dream Home built for entertaining culminates with the outdoor pool and grill area. Gorgeous Texas limestone columns punctuate a broad space that includes a large teak dining table, top-of-the-line gas grill and swimming pool. Providing a center of gravity to any size of gathering is the stately limestone fireplace.

Landscape designer Alan King was especially excited about the prospects of designing with a pool. "What a fantastic element in a house that has...a fitness feel. Here on the lake (with) boating, fishing and the outdoor environment, we wanted an area where people could come up and cool off and also use this as an entertainment feature."

The pool is configured with resistance jets which can be turned on for a vigorous workout. "Basically like a swimming treadmill," notes King. "You can swim against that current and never get to the end." Combined with the dual treadmills and workbenches of the exercise room, Dream Home 2005 is suited for active, healthy lifestyles like no other Dream Home before it.

The most interesting feature of the pool area might be the limestone columns that comprise the arbor. The "Dream Team" engaged in a spirited discussion on whether the feature would impede the gorgeous views of Lake Tyler. "We felt very confident that we needed to create a perceived wall here," says King, which gives the entire cooking and dining area a more intimate feeling. The wood slats will also have a vine, which, when fully grown, should provide a striking view filled with character.

And there is so much more to this area: the large cooking space with a state-of-the-art grill, the outdoor fireplace that will be the perfect accompanyment to cool evening air, the large teak dining table and the three drapes of the breezeway, which can either shut out the light for the entertainment room, serve as a changing room for poolgoers, or simply become a place of quiet solitude.
