Part living room, part dining room, part kitchen, the great room is a stunning room to behold. Dramatic cypress rafters and a strong, soaring brick chimney give way to cypress walls, oak floors and comfortable furniture.

Its functionality also makes a strong impression; simple themes dominate: a symbiotic relationship with the outdoors, symmetrical lines and balance. Designer Linda Woodrum emphasizes that beyond the gorgeous simplicity are many "visual vignettes that are almost like being underwater." "It's like a painting," she says. "Your eyes want to keep traveling...they don't want to stop."

It was a painting that spawned Linda's color palette. Seeking to develop tranquil and mellow themes, she consulted with artist Patricia Madison Lusk. The great room painting she selected is "dramatic, but it's calming and cool. It was just right." The painting features an amazing 250 colors, but most succinct is the aspect of seeing the outdoors in the painting itself. When you look out of the windows, you literally see the same landscape the painting evokes.

Across from this painting is a dining area framed by twin dressers. The breathtaking views of the bay are visible from here, as well as the lush growth that greets visitors at the front of the house. The dining table is adorned with imported French candlesticks that are reportedly 200 years old and add a light, whimsical feel to the room.

By incorporating the living area, dining area and kitchen in a large open space, architect Randy Johnson skillfully created a room much like the main hall of a Florida summer camp. The large fireplace that faces the kitchen cooktop is the perfect place for gathering and relaxing, all while surrounded by windows on all four sides. Although crafted for social interaction, the great room--with it's spectacular views of East Bay--can provide a solitary soul a striking venue for viewing the sunrise.

Johnson, like Woodrum, embraces the sense of both security and drama that the room exudes. "I can imagine the house at night, before a thunderstorm...going through the actions of closing the room up, then sitting down in front of the windows and watching the lightning play out across the bay."
