City Apartment

Kitchen Design : Episode KDE-1208 -- More Projects »
Mitchell Robbins fell in love with the view from his urban high-rise apartment and wanted to take advantage of those views in his living spaces. The result, achieved with the help of architect Peter Sollogub, is an elegant, open plan with the kitchen at the center.

The city loft has open spaces that blend seamlessly into each other.

The kitchen area is defined by a lowered floating ceiling that hides ductwork, while the seating area has a higher ceiling.

Warm wood tones, a black mist granite counter and stainless appliances combine for a contemporary look that is anything but cold and sterile.

The latest built-in appliances, dramatically grouped, include an espresso/cappuccino machine, microwave and two wall ovens--one of which is a steam oven, the other a convection oven.
  • The galley style kitchen is sleek and efficient, using contrasting woods (for warmth) and cool stainless steel (for sparkle).
  • The rectangular island makes a handsome design statement, with a six-burner electric stove, raised counter on the outside, and at one end, an L-section that accommodates two barstools.
  • The granite countertop is connected to the wood veneer cabinetry with a band of stainless steel that is repeated in the appliances, the backsplash, shelving, sink and decorative band around the refrigerator.
  • The gleam of frosted glass panels used for the upper cabinet blends well with the wall of stainless steel above the sink.
  • The flooring is red birch.
  • The neutral color palette of creams, wood tones and black create a soothing Zen-like feeling in the open living spaces.
