Design on a Dime : Episode DOD-312 -- More Projects »

The Dilemma

Host Lee Snijders tours the room to discuss the many issues that these two face and to figure out how to make it work while still adhering to the university restrictions. Due to the limited space, storage for two is one of the biggest challenges to overcome. Another problem to address is the lack of lighting available for them to study. Last on the list is to display both of their personal items including hobbies and photos and to do it with a lot of school spirit.

The Solution

Here's how Snijders and design coordinators Summer Baltzer and Charles Burbridge create organization, storage and study space in the small room:

  • The furniture is rearranged to make better use of the space. The beds are situated opposite each other and raised up to make room for two new chairs, ottomans and bookcases. A shelf is attached to the wall above each bed to act as a nightstand.

  • Burbridge constructs a tall rolling storage unit outfitted with a cork bulletin board.

  • Snijders creates a putting green out of 3/4" wood and Astroturf. He constructs it in two pieces so that it can be easily stored away.

Video: Baltzer shows how to create a magnetic multiphoto holder.
  • Using four magnetic boards, a length of chain and clip photo holders, Baltzer figures out a way to display photos while causing minimal damage to the dorm room walls. She drills holes in the bottom and top of all four boards and links them together with chain. She hot-glues magnets to the backs of the photo holders and arranges those on the boards. The entire piece is hung on the wall between the two beds.

  • Task lighting is added above each bed, new table lamps are placed on both desks and new floor lamps are brought into the seating area under each bed.

  • New bedding in their school colors finishes the design.
