Country Charm
Kitchen Design : Episode KDE-1205 -- More Projects »
Host Joan Kohn visits the circa 1920 California Mediterranean home of Johanna McHugh. In the renovated kitchen, designer Janet Perkins helped achieve the two main design goals: preserving the original architecture and increasing the square footage of the original room. This was done by removing a wall and adding patio doors for a larger sense of space.
- The galley kitchen, which has about four feet between the kitchen and the stove, packs a lot of function in a small space. The refrigerator is tucked around the corner since there wasnt enough room for it in the main space.
- Color is used lavishly throughout the home. In the kitchen, cabinets are a colorful mix of painted indigo blue base cabinets and creamy white wall cabinets; the walls are soft peach. In the butlers pantry, walls are acid green with rose-colored cabinets.
- Instead of the typical tile backsplash, two large Italian tiles were positioned behind the white farmhouse sink. The faucet is a low-profile copper and brass design.
- The old linoleum was removed to reveal wide Douglas fir planks, which were refinished and covered with colorful area rugs.
- The counters are teak with a beveled edge and have the same warm color as the wood floors.
- The large commercial cooker has two ovens, four burners, a griddle and a grill. The slate backsplash is fitted with a system for displaying pots and pans.
