Mixing elements together is one of the best ways to make a tiny room more livable. While keeping costs to a minimum, designer Carmen Quartararo created an Old World style to bring in a dramatic statement and add a touch of class to an extremely small home.

Before, living room

The huge windows in the living room were one of the few things she liked about the space—however, the painted floor, low ceiling and unattractive fixtures presented a definitive challenge to her design.

The floor received a face-lift with travertine marble outlined in black slate. Handpainted walls create a two-dimensional look. Textured and patterned fabrics are used abundantly and in layers on the small-scale furnishings. Wool and velvet throw pillows in solid colors add a slight casual feel to the ornate room.

Before, bedroom

The major advantages in the bedroom were the two large windows overlooking the gardens—however, that only left one solid wall to place the furniture on.

She used the same color palette as in the living room but deepened it with a chocolate brown velvet bed skirt and black-painted furniture. An iridescent stripe on the windows keeps the look balanced. The shapes and curves of the headboard make the wall look larger and dressers on both sides of one window add weight to the space. Layers of heavily tasseled and fringed pillows decorate the satiny smooth bedspread.

Before, kitchen

Before, the narrow kitchen was dark and dated.

The goal for the galley-style kitchen was to make it functional and elegant. She was able to do that with an abundance of tile and a neutral backdrop. Open shelves on one side keep the design light; tiles placed on the diagonal create visual interest. To keep costs down, she used cabinets with a maple veneer and antique reproduction hardware. For a touch of color, she used a simple green check fabric for the windows treatments and on a simple stool.
