Designer Sherry Scott faced a huge challenge when she agreed to take on the task of refurbishing an 800-square-foot commercial space into an eclectic modern apartment. She used the original red bricks around the walls as her starting point and from there mixed in a number of different elements. The combination of marble, concrete, glass, steel, wood, sheer fabrics and brick definitely creates a semi-modern, spunky, eclectic design.

The entire space is visible upon entering the front door, so for cohesion, Scott used the same materials and textures throughout. Furnishings are stylish and sophisticated with high sheen finishes and curvaceous lines. The two wood tones on the kitchen cabinets exude a furniture style in keeping with the rest of the space. Metal insets coordinate with the abundance of stainless steel. The glass in the bar area is not only functional, the curved shape makes it aesthetically pleasing as well. The smooth and polished top coordinates with the metal surfaces, yet the heavily textured surface underneath adds an abundance of visual interest.

In such a small space, lighting was critical for both completing everyday tasks and communicating a mood during dinner parties. The fixtures over the bar are made of a two-layer Italian glass, which eliminates hot spots. Directional lighting in the kitchen is able to be moved depending on need. Over the dining table is a chandelier that dangles like fine jewelry.

Adjacent to the living space is the bedroom, which is somewhat concealed behind semi-sheer draperies. The gauzy material not only acts as a barrier to the rest of apartment, it complements the neutral color palette and soft textures in both the living room and bedroom. Such a small space required Scott to create impact with form and texture. Two solid colors of fabric are alternated on the upholstered headboard. Whimsical patterns on the bedspread and painted side table add subtle colors and texture.
