Old English Library

Design on a Dime : Episode DOD-306 -- More Projects »
Jack and Ginger Freed have collected pieces to create an old English library for years and yet their room has become a cluttered storage space. The main issues include the lack of proper storage for books, space to display accessories, paint to warm up the room and a comfortable seating plan.

The Dilemma

Snijders gathers Summer Baltzer and Charles Burbridge together to discuss the design plan, which includes a wall of coordinated shelving with crown molding for their books and accessories and reconfiguring the furnishings for a more comfortable and functional reading area. Burbridge's task is to choose a faux finish to enhance the Old World atmosphere, while Baltzer's mission is to transform Jack's stained glass into illuminated art.

The Solution

The uncoordinated catchall space is turned into an old English library with the following design elements:

  • The walls are treated with a faux leather paint finish. The base coat is mixed with glaze then rolled on and lightly wiped off to create a warm bottom layer. Once the base coat is dry, Burbridge mixes a top coat of glaze and tint in a ratio of four parts glaze to one part tint. The mixture is applied with a rag for a soft leathery, textured look.

  • Baltzer turns Jack's stained glass into an impressive focal point by adding photographer's diffusion and rope lights. She staples the diffusion to the interior of the wood frame, places the rope lights on the paper, then pulls the paper over and staples it into place. When finished, she trims the excess paper so it's not visible from the other side.

  • The shelving units are embellished with crown molding that Snijders pre-stains to match. The molding unifies the shelving along the wall and gives the room an Old World feel.

  • Burbridge accents an Egyptian papyrus with black fabric in a new frame. He uses double-stick tape to hold the fabric in place and uses the same tape on the corners of the papyrus to attach the artwork to the fabric. Gold paint dabbed onto the frame's edges highlights the detail.

  • The Freed's leather furniture is brought back into the space in a more reading-friendly arrangement. Fringed pillows bring in the texture that Ginger desired.
