Spanish-Style Bedroom

Lee Snijders meets with Summer Baltzer and Charles Burbridge to discuss a plan that will transform Dan and Nicki's country-style bedroom into a hacienda retreat. The design team wants to keep the furniture to save money and instead focus on accents and color to achieve the rustic Spanish look. Baltzer plans to refinish the existing furniture, while Burbridge focuses on the closet doors. Since the look is in the details, Snijders sets his sights on finding the perfect wrought-iron pieces at a metal supply company.

Here's how the team uses color, fabric and accessories to transform the country-style bedroom into a rustic Spanish space:

• A peanut shell paint color is mixed with glaze (four parts glaze to one part paint) and ragged onto the wall for a mottled, Old World faux finish. More faux finishes>>

• Baltzer refurbishes the homeowners' dresser and side tables for a timeworn look. She strips and sands off most of the paint, leaving just enough to create a rustic effect. She applies a gel stain in the same tone of the homeowners' bed then seals each piece with a polyacrylic spray.
