Romantic Homes editor Eileen Paulin and host Kitty Bartholomew tour a home that is the perfect example of how to mix florals, colors and other patterns to create a room that's romantic and not too cluttered.

A beautiful painting full of pattern and color was the starting point for dressing the living and dining areas (above, left). Placed over the mantel, it serves as the focal point and brings the eye upward. Blue-and-white porcelain is predominant in both spaces and acts as a neutral against the bold reds, greens and yellows. Delicate handpainting over the windows adds eye candy up high. Windows are left relatively bare with only simple coverings secured to the wall with finial knobs.

Since the dining and living spaces coexist in a somewhat open space, the colors and patterns are essentially the same, with a few more textural elements found in the dining space. The table is dressed with elements made of lace, straw, wood, glass and raffia, which combine for a casually elegant display. Again, the space is grounded in blue and white with the bolder colors grabbing the attention. Area rugs in each room feature a floral design but on different materials--the living room floor features a soft needlepoint while the dining room contains a raffia rug detailed with a painted design. More visual interest is evident in the juxtaposition of the dark iron chandelier decorated with light-reflecting crystals.

The kitchen follows the same colorful palette but green is noticed more so in the fabrics and furnishings. The banquette underneath the corner windows serves up ample seating space. Another iron chandelier hangs overhead; glass candleholders hang from the arms for a whimsical effect.

The master bedroom is a harmony of color, pattern and texture. The color story is subdued with a soft celadon on the walls and ceiling. Feminine and masculine themes are intertwined on the windows with soft sheers against rattan blinds and also on the bed, which is dressed with pale-colored florals and stripes on a wooden bed frame atop a jute rug. Blue-and-white porcelain lamp bases are paired with decoupaged dark red floral shades.

The "red room" is just that with cranberry-colored walls. The striking color is tempered with white woodwork, paler hues on the bed and simple accessories. A built-in corner headboard has a shelf on top and a cubby underneath for ample display space. Matching sconces flank the bed and add ambient lighting.

Periwinkle walls are paired with wooden furnishings in the second guest room. Maize is a secondary color in the space and complements the pine pieces. The bed is plump with pillows but isn't fussy; the layered bed skirt adds fullness but stops short of the floor.

A strong garden theme is evident in the sitting room. A small TV is housed in a custom birdhouse-style cabinet. Trellis wallpaper sets the stage and is contrasted with green trim. A green wicker table and chair set is nestled up against one wall. A needlepoint rug features a red rose pattern.
