In the chilly northeast, designer Genevieve Snyder brings a bit of " Mediterraneo" to a boring master bedroom. It's spacious, has great windows and French doors, but even the homeowner, Pat Schreck, admits to Snyder that it isn't reaching its potential. Both Schreck and Snyder decide to bring the fun, warm, fantasy feeling of a Sam Robin design into the space. By using vivid color, rich carved woods and exotic accents, Genevieve Snyder transforms this mundane bedroom into a Mediterranean paradise and Schreck is whisked away on a vacation in her own home:
- Once the room is emptied, the walls are brightened with white ragged on over the existing cream color. Next, the window and door trim is painted a vivid blue and the first wall seen upon entering is covered in a treatment similar to the Florida home. The same paint, a damp rag and some glaze are used to create the soft blue wall treatment. On the opposite wall, Snyder paints a half circle in the same way, and then stencils gold stars over it with acrylic paint.
- Textured velvet slipcovers filled with batting and secured with Velcro strips cover the stark metal head and footboard of the existing bed, which is placed on the opposite wall from where it started. A white textured coverlet topped with crisp linen pillows plus smaller decorative ones complete the bed.
- Mismatched dark wood pieces like Robin used in her space function as nightstands. On one side is a dark carved cabinet, while stacked antique boxes are used on the other.
- In the unused corner near where the bed used to be, Snyder paints a column effect with a sponge. Once it's dry, she glues mosaic pieces and glass beads to the top and bottom to mimic the columns in the bedroom Sam Robin designed. Once the glue is dry, grout finishes the project. The empty corner is then filled with an antique desk, tiled mirror, a Moroccan urn and a decorative iron candlestick holder.
- One of the elements that gives the Sam Robins-designed living room such interest is the contrast between the bright blue walls and the white slipcovered furniture. A red loveseat that's perfect for the bedroom is transformed with a readymade cream slipcover. A red Moroccan end table, beautiful mosaic coffee table, dark wood campaign chair, pictures of desert scenes and a large potted plant complete the stylish seating area.
- To finish the space, Moroccan lanterns with colored glass hang by the French doors because Robin loves the flattering light from lanterns and candles.
