Designer Kim Salmela recently moved from Minneapolis to a small Los Angeles apartment. It's only about 1,000 square feet, but she cleverly used each inch to create a simply chic pad.

She infused much of her home with a soft aqua color, reminiscent of old Hollywood and the ocean. Her designs focus on juxtaposing shapes, colors and furnishings for a sleek, yet unexpected look. The smooth lines of the sofa contrast against the fluffy shag carpet as well as the sleekness of the leather against the pile of the velvet on the sofa. She wanted the aqua to stand out in the space and so used it on the large window and in various small accessories against a light palette of whites and creams. A touch of the unexpected is seen in the chrome dinette set in the far corner. Purchased at a thrift store in Minnesota, she repainted the dated brown vinyl a fresh spring green. Off the living room is a small office where she freehand painted one tall wall in geometric shapes using the colors found in the living room.

A glass-topped table in the dining room helps the room feel more spacious. She's surrounded the table with four ottomans instead of traditional chairs for a clear sightline through the room. An upside-down Asian umbrella functions as a chandelier; its muted shades tie in with the neutral palette.

Her master bedroom is a symphony of rich elegant fabrics and strong color. She started the look with the fuchsia fabric on the duvet and kept the rest of the room neutral with creamy walls and understated accents. However, she painted a tone-on-tone geometric mural above the bed for visual interest. A round mirror on the opposite wall contrasts with the straight lines on the walls and fabric.

Saris take center stage in the guest bedroom where they're used as a focal point behind the bed and on the windows. The bed is dressed is bright white to best show off the rich colors.

Salmela wanted a retro vintage wallpaper look on her bathroom walls so she painted a geometric design in aqua and black. The pattern accentuates the high ceilings without overpowering the eye.
