A multicolored toile, Indian floral, matelassé plaid and French blue polka dot emphasize a traditional French country look. The maize color is the common denominator between each fabric.

As seen in this living room, the toile and plaid combine on the settee for an interesting collage of color and pattern. Fringed pillows and blue and gold fabric add depth and texture to the design.
Fabric expert Jan Jessup says the distinctive French country palette consists of Mediterranean blues, sunflower yellows and the color of red poppies. Common motifs are roosters, florals and fruit. Matelassé fabric adds interest with its quilted effect and provides a resting spot for the eye amid the many patterns and bold colors. French country furnishings encompass both exposed wood frames and painted pieces and accents range from wrought-iron to painted lampshades and plates.
