Oceanfront Design
Bed & Bath Design : Episode BDE-1207 -- More Projects »
Host Joan Kohn visits the beachfront home of Maureen and Steve Quill. Originally a lodge, the homes choppy floor plan was shifted to combine smaller rooms into fewer, larger rooms. Designer Olivia Sanderson used two bedrooms, a bath and a fire escape to create the new second floor master suite, which runs the entire width of the house.
- A casual cottage style was chosen for the master suite. White walls with beadboard wainscoting, whitewashed wood furniture, lightly stained pine flooring and hooked area rugs set the light and airy tone. Stars adorn the sheer white curtains and comfortable upholstered chairs, while shells are scattered on the area rug. Blue accents, reminiscent of the sea, add punch.
- Two small windows were removed and an entire side wall of windows was installed, finished at one end with patio doors leading to the deck and ocean views.
- A former fire escape was transformed into the seating area with an octagonal shape, vaulted ceiling and hot air balloon chandelier.
- Pine flooring was left uncarpeted for ease of maintenance. Area rugs are easily cleaned of sand.
- A second seating area at one end of the room doubles as a dressing space in front of the closets. It features comfortable chairs and a dressing table.
- The bathroom was formerly a small bedroom. It features an English pedestal sink, a fiberglass tub unit, nonskid ceramic flooring and a rubbed blue finish on the wood cabinetry. Narrow beadboard is used for the wainscoting.
