At Home with Color
Kitty Bartholomew: You're Home : Episode KIT-1208 -- More Projects »
Artist Jean Jack's remodeled log cabin is a true representation of the country style she loves. Most of the furnishings and accessories reflect a folk-art, primitive look but she's interspersed the design with a broad range of colors and some simple, clean-lined accents to give each room a more contemporary country look.
White walls, a white sofa and a white wing-back chair in the living room provide a perfect backdrop to the punches of color in the artwork and accessories. A tall coffee table was previously used in a hallway--here it's the perfect height for dining (above, left). The glass vases behind the sofa are from Spain and were previously used to hold wine. She's kept them flower-free because their organic shapes are more interesting as art. Behind the sofa, a pair of wing-back chairs and a side table anchor a small seating area (above, middle). Old children's blocks from the 1920s are stacked for visual interest. Jack's red painting on a far wall adds a pop of color and reinforces the primitive design (above, right).
Instead of starting with a favorite fabric or accessory, Jack mixed various paint colors together to get a custom blue color for the guest bedroom. Once on the walls, she began the task of filling the space with her treasures. Twin beds are dressed with understated quilts, which add a soft pink hue.
A soothing blue/gray/green color on the kitchen cabinets becomes the neutral backdrop for her collection of small houses and whirlygigs in the open shelving. Stainless steel appliances complement the cool color. The handpainted floorcloth anchors the space with a palette of red, black and green. The breakfast area is outfitted with mismatched chairs, including a grass-green painted piece and an upholstered wing-back in a blue and white pattern.
The sitting room shares space with a dining area in the back. She's once again placed a tall coffee table in front of the sofa. An abundance of shelves and a wide ledge provide the perfect spot for displaying her collection of small chairs. A hooked rug in front of the sofa is almost like artwork underfoot. Mismatched chairs surround the dining table. Another place where you can see art on the floor is in the hallway. She painted the floor in a green and white checkerboard pattern and layered a hooked rug on top.
The walls in her master bedroom are painted a mustard color. The skylight was installed by the previous owners. It helps to expand the space and add even more drama to the odd-shaped room. Furnishings are kept simple and include a chair upholstered in a salvaged quilt, a contemporary iron bedframe and Jack's serene folk-art paintings.
