Julie and John Curtiss bought a 35-year-old 4,000-square-foot home just about a year ago. Its ample space, indoors and out, gives them plenty of room to raise their twin daughters. With their Southwestern art and furnishings, they created a warm inviting home, but they need help making the kitchen more colorful, up-to-date and inviting. After meeting with all the designers, the Curtisses decide to go with Jean Blumin and Caren Rideau's vision of a rustic kitchen featuring multiple workstations. What was once a cold black and white kitchen is now a functional space brimming with warmth and color. The awkward hood over the island is gone, which opens up the entire room. The range has been moved over to a beautifully tiled cook center--now a striking focal point in the room. The rustic freestanding cabinets add a nice Southwestern touch, and upgraded appliances make the kitchen more functional.
