Neglected Home Transformed Into Beautiful Bungalow
Kitty Bartholomew: You're Home : Episode KIT-1206 -- More Projects »
Interior designer Greg Parker transformed a neglected 100-year-old home into a beautiful bungalow perfect for relaxing and entertaining. Although the home is small, he employed a variety of interesting design elements to make the home functional for his lifestyle.
In lieu of a traditional sofa, he created a seating area out of two side chairs and a small table and opposite that he placed his piano. He installed recessed lighting to make the low ceiling seem a bit taller. Bamboo shades mounted inside the window casings also help to enlarge the space. Potted bamboo plants set on concrete bases outside the window create an instant screen and provide more privacy. The floors are South American mahogany.
In the kitchen, he had the old light gray laminate countertops refinished by professionals. They created a faux stone look with a tinted water-base polyurethane finish. The floors are coconut palmwood, which lend a more casual feel to the space. The glass-topped table creates an open look. He disguised the blond oak chair frames by applying aniline dye with a wire brush for a deep, rich finish.
He converted the attic into a master bedroom by extending the roof and installing dormer windows. The furniture is placed on angles to take advantage of the limited headroom. Instead of a traditional bi-fold or swing-out closet door, he installed a shoji-screen backed with natural hemp instead of rice paper. He created artwork out of his family's jewelry collection by artfully arranging the pieces on colored mat board and framing with shadow boxes.
