We've seen all the ways to decorate a mantel but what about using a mantel in a totally different way? Ki Nassauer and Sue P. Whitney retask the usual mantel to create other unique furniture pieces.

Use a small-scale mantel to frame a mirror on a dresser. Paint the mantel as desired, add a piece of mirror to fit the opening and attach to the top of the dresser. The top can also be used as a display shelf.

A larger mantel can be used as a headboard. Add a base and cut a board to fit the center opening. Paint as desired. Wrap the board with batting and fabric and attach.

Turn a mantel into a functional bookcase by adding a base, a beadboard back and shelves.
