Graceful Living Room

Country Style : Episode COS-403 -- More Projects »
Michael Rainey is not your typical country collector. In fact, you might say he breaks the mold. Instead of a background in the decorative arts, Rainey's background is the military where he was a U.S. Marine Corps fighter pilot. Nonetheless his love of things old and valuable spans a lifetime and now includes an antiques business he opened after retiring from the military.

The graceful fireplace mantel dictated the overall feel of the room. Rich and varied accents include architectural pieces discovered in Italy (at right). Rainey happened upon a small town destroyed by an earthquake and learned the Italian government was going to bulldoze the ruins. He promptly gathered some keepsakes and now displays them on the mantel.

Other antiques include Italian architectural drawings, an 1800s child's table now serving as his coffee table and a handsome secretary built in the 1800s in Hartford, Connecticut (at right). The placement of the frames flanking the secretary came about on a whim--he noticed how interesting they looked stacked in his antiques shop and decided to try out the arrangement at home.
