The Dilemma

Host Sam Kivett outlines the problems, which include minimizing the rock fireplace, addressing the awkward garden window, changing the room plan and adding much needed color to offset the very neutral furnishings.

The Solution

Here's how Kivett and his design coordinators, Charles Burbridge and Summer Baltzer, liven up the neutral space with color and a new layout:

  • Due to the open floor plan, they're only able to paint two of the walls, settling on a deep burgundy color that will help make the fireplace less prominent.

  • Burbridge begins by creating a three-panel screen using hollow-core closet doors. He primes and paints each door then hinges each together. For a finishing touch, he applies gold paint to decorative wood trim and attaches the pieces for three-dimensional interest.

  • Baltzer creates two sets of window treatments--one for the awkward garden window and another to simulate a window on the other side of the fireplace. She embellishes store-bought velvet panels with fancy trim for additional elegance. For more ideas, watch 20 videos on different types of window treatments>>

  • Kivett creates an orchid arrangement in a red planter. This will help to create another focal point in the room besides the stone fireplace. More tropical arrangements>>

  • The sofas are repositioned opposite each other to create a seating area conducive to conversation. A colorful area rug helps tie the elements together. New lamps add much-needed ambiant lighting. The room's final touches include a new cherry bookcase for storage and light-filtering sheers on the sliding glass doors.
