The Dilemma

Host Sam Kivett arrives to discuss the room and gets an immediate feeling for her eclectic style as he looks over treasured collections, which include retro furniture and objects, globes of all sizes, records and CDs--all of which she would like to keep in the room. The design team decides to manage the clutter by adding storage to better display these collections, add a new rug to enhance the hardwood floors, make the two oddly-shaped windows seem more uniform and bring color to the beige walls. They also decide to further address the needs of Holdridge's guests by adding task lighting and turning the sofa bed, which is now overwhelmed by clutter, into a focal point.

The Solution

Here's how the cluttered space is energized with color, organization and a fun travel-related design motif:

  • The walls are painted a light blue, which becomes the perfect backdrop for the globe-inspired paint treatment that design coordinator Charles Burbridge creates. He freehands continents onto the wall, paints each a complementary color and outlines the shapes with a red marker for definition.

  • Design coordinator Summer Baltzer works with Burbridge to create small storage cubes that will also act as seating. After Burbridge creates the box structure and paints the inside a light blue, Baltzer covers the exterior with batting and travel-themed fabric. She first staples the batting in place, then creates a slipcover out of the fabric. Once it's fitted over the cube, she staples the edges and finishes the rough edges with trim. Casters are added so the cubes can be easily moved around the room.

  • The storage problem is solved with matching cabinets placed on either side of the loveseat, a red-painted CD storage cabinet and a large storage piece to hold all of her albums.

  • Floor-to-ceiling red curtains add a splash of color and help to unify the odd-shaped windows.

  • Contemporary reading lamps add necessary lighting over the loveseat.

  • A colorful rug helps to tie in all of the accessories.
