Video: Matt Fox used an existing armoire as inspiration to build a matching sofa table.
Materials:

1x3 and 1x8 pine lumber
wood glue
clamps
miter saw
wood for cleats
screws
finish nails
hammer
luan plywood
circular saw
table saw with dado blade

Steps:

1. Start the table construction with the legs. The ones on the armoire are made of pine and measure 2-1/2 x 2-1/2 inches so use the same dimension. Glue three 1x3s together by running a bead of glue along the boards and clamping them together overnight. Then run them through a table saw and cut them down to 2-1/2 inches in width. Cut them to 33 inches in length with a miter saw.

2. Cut a 1x8 to five feet in length for the back board and two 1x8 side panels that are 12 inches in length. Attach the sides to the legs first by using wooden cleats and secure with wood glue and screws. Then secure the back panel the same way (figure A). The bottom board is used to support the table and as a gliding surface for the drawers. Attach this 1x8 to the assembly from the bottom using glue and finish nails (figure A).
3. The drawer area is framed with the bottom and side boards that are already attached to the legs plus a top board. Attach the top to the cleats from above using glue and nails.

4. Two vertical dividers separate the side drawers from two longer center drawers. Cut the vertical pieces to length, and then attach them to the top and bottom boards using screws for extra support. Then cut the horizontal drawer divider and attach it to the two verticals (figure B).
5. The side drawers measure 12x12 inches and are constructed using rabbet joints at the corners. Cut the drawer pieces to size using a circular saw. Then, use a table saw to run the front and back boards across the dado blade set at 3/4 inch. Now the two side boards will butt up perfectly into the rabbet grooves.
6. Cut all the drawer pieces with the dado set at 1/8 inch to create a groove 1/4 inch from the bottom of each board, which allows for the luan drawer bottom. Attach the back to the sides first; slip in the luan, and then attach the front to complete the drawer. Repeat the same process for the two longer 22-inch drawers.
7. To finish the top, use a piece of laminated lumber cut to allow for a two-inch reveal around the edge. Attach it from underneath using one-inch long drywall screws.
