Handmade Stencil

Room by Room : Episode RXR-1708 -- More Projects »

Shari Hiller was inspired to create a handmade stencil by taking a scroll design right out of the chosen area rug.
Materials:

existing wall paint (SW2226)
stencil material
X-acto knife
painter's tape
paint or stencil brushes
variety of paint colors (Pear Tint SW1402, Dromedary Camel SW1124, Olive Drab SW1166)
area rug (Spain Rug 7'8"x10'10") (Lowe's)

Steps:

1. Trace the chosen design onto stencil material and cut it out. Note: The featured stencil is half of the finished design. This makes it easier to work with and can be turned over to complete the other half.
2. Measure the length of the stencil and transfer that to the walls all the way around the room. Tape the stencil in place (make sure it's level), and brush the entire design with beige. Move around the room again once it's dry to finish the other half of the design.

3. Add dimension by handpainting darker sage along the lower areas and white on the upper ones (figure A). Let dry.
4. Add gold accents where desired to add even more dimension and let dry.
