One of the newer countertops available is cement, which is a high-end choice.
  • The first step in a kitchen remodel is to establish the budget, which should be in line with the overall value of the house. A kitchen renovation will usually require 10 percent to 25 percent of the overall budget. The main cost areas in a kitchen are appliances, cabinets, counters, flooring, sinks and faucets. Material and installation costs should both be included.
  • The price for cabinets ranges from $150 per linear foot to $1,500 per foot and up.
  • Some popular trends for cabinetry include a two-tone look, glazing and distressing, for an Old World lived-in look.
  • Counter choices include plastic laminate, solid surface, granite, butcher block and manufactured stone, as well as stainless steel, ceramic or granite tiles, even cement. Pricing ranges from $20 per square foot installed for a laminate, up to $75 per square foot and higher for stainless or granite.
  • Solid surface is the most popular countertop, due in part to the wide range of color choices and because it has a middle-of-the-road price.
  • Flooring choices include solid wood and veneered wood, stone, granite, marble, ceramic tile and vinyl. Durability and maintenance issues are just as important as the look.
  • The stone look is the hottest seller for floors right now. The least expensive flooring is ceramic tile, which runs $2 per square foot. Stone and specialty tiles can run up to $20 to $25 per square foot.
  • Sink considerations include size, depth, number of bowls and materials. Materials include stainless, solid surface, composite, or enameled cast iron. Price ranges from $100 to $500.
  • The most popular faucet is the pull-out spray faucet. Most common is the single lever, although the wide-spread, separate hot and cold faucet is gaining in popularity. Another desired feature for faucets is the instant hot water fixture. Prices range from $100 to $500, depending on the make and finish. Most will come with a lifetime warranty, no matter what the price range.
  • The most important budgetary consideration is establishing priorities: which features do you want to spend the most on?
