This living room is homey but a bit bland and it's going to need some color to give it a Susan Caruso touch.

Animal prints and artwork plus lots of candles give this room the interest it was lacking.

Inspired by Susan Caruso's love of bold and exotic interiors, designer Genevieve Snyder decided to take a timid living room for a walk on the wild side.

The new look is worldly, sophisticated and accentuates the room's finest attributes. The furniture is soft and comfortable because there's a lot more cushioning and the new layout is much better for conversation.
A Susan Caruso space is bold and daring, using color and shape to make a dramatic statement. This living room is terrific but looks a bit lived in--the slipcovers are slipping off the couches and the coffee table is a magnet for clutter so designer Genevieve Snyder touches it up using inspiration from Caruso's style:

  • This living room is a fabulous space with curved picture windows and a beautiful limestone fireplace but it's not quite working or ready for company. It's cleared of all the old furniture leaving beautiful hardwood floors and lots of light streaming in through the wall of bare picture windows so Snyder can start from scratch.

  • The lack of window treatments makes the room feel cold and sterile so a striped pattern is sewn along the bottom of soft chenille curtains for instant warmth. The panels are paired with sheers to filter light and add softness.

  • Snyder adds a very traditional area rug followed by a high console table and an oversized plum chenille couch. The look is eclectic and the addition of animal print chairs pull in the wild look designer Susan Caruso loves so much.

  • An animal print runner topped by an elegant console table and a big gilded mirror replace the armoire that stood in the corner. The arrangement adds a lot of glamour to a space that was bland.

  • Caruso likes the richness of mahogany, so an oversized round mahogany coffee table with a glass top is placed in front of the couch. The decorative details on the sides of the table play off the natural color scheme in the room and the furniture arrangement highlights the fireplace.

  • Accessories complete a room's design and Caruso believes they should mean something. Since she likes to tango with tigers, big cat prints are added to the throw pillows and exotic artwork is placed on the mantel. The table lamps on the console behind the sofa replicate the Tuscan villa look of the Cypress Hotel, as does the large floral display in front of the mirror. Finally, several groupings of candles add sparkle and romance to what once was a rather dull room.
