Fantasy Tour: Mediterranean Kitchen

Kitchen Design : Episode KDE-502 -- More Projects »
Host Joan Kohn visits the 1898 townhouse of Terri Galvez. The home’s original kitchen was tiny, and desperately needed updating. Working with designer Jerry Weed, who relocated the kitchen, Galvez pursued a Mediterranean theme of vivid colors and an Old World feel, with a grape motif repeated throughout.

The large island with a concrete countertop acts as a friendly buffer between cook and guests.

The elaborate hood and hearth, which has a tile design on the splash, provide the room’s focal point.
  • Woodwork for cabinets and trim was kept neutral (shades of white) but far from boring, with intricate carved accents. Appliances are also white. The light woodwork plays off the vivid yellow walls and deep blue accessories used throughout the space.
  • The flooring is beige Italian ceramic tile in a variety of sizes laid in a random pattern.
  • The backsplash is white tile with vivid Mexican tile accents in blues and yellows.
  • Counters are softly tinted concrete.
  • The original fireplace was very plain. An antique mantel and tile inlays that match backsplash tiles enliven the fireplace and tie it into the rest of the room.
