Salvaged Materials
Decorating Cents : Episode DCT-1713 -- More Projects »
Host Joan Steffend tours the home of architect Wynne Yelland, who used salvaged materials to give his home a brand new look.
- Instead of removing a load-bearing wall, Yelland left the studs intact and just finished the rough edges with salvaged trim. This created an interesting nook to display collectibles and accessories.
- The fireplace is surfaced in salvaged chalkboard slate from an old schoolhouse. The slate was cut into individual tiles, which Yelland purchased for about $3 a square foot.
Yelland refurbished the original metal cabinets by first stripping off the paint, burnishing a pattern onto them with a wire-brush drill bit and rotary drill then applying a dry-brush paint finish for an industrial look. The pot rack consists of copper pipe with heavy-duty copper wire used for hangers.Instead of spending money on costly tile for the downstairs bathroom remodel, he clad the interior with galvanized steel sheets.
