After
Host Joan Steffend and designer Barbara Sculati create a restful guest bedroom space with monochromatic tones.

  • A frottage technique is used to create a stone look on the walls.
  • A daybed is created out of a garage-sale trundle bed unit, side rails and an upholstered headboard made out of plywood, batting and remnant fabric. The side rails are slipcovered with the same fabric used on the headboard. Antique satin curtains are transformed into a bed cover with a long flowing skirt.
  • A baker's pot rack is used to hold gold embroidered sheers that frame the bed. The fabric gracefully drapes over twin swing-arm lamps on either side of the bed. A crocheted valance adds the crowning touch.
  • A bargain chandelier is dressed up with fabric-covered shades.
  • Each window is dressed with more of the satin fabric, held in place with iron door knockers that act as tiebacks. The valance is a vintage table runner cut in half and trimmed with chandelier crystals and glass beads.
  • A garage-sale desk is transformed with metallic gold spray paint and drapery lace used as a stencil.
  • Accessories include garage-sale mirrors refurbished with paint, matching vintage lamps, a glass shelf resting on iron brackets over the radiator and a clock made out of a ceiling medallion and a wood salad bowl.

Learn how to create a faux stone look with paint and newspaper.
How-to: Painted Faux Stone Wall Treatment

  1. Apply a light, cream-colored base coat to the walls and allow to dry.
  2. Mix together equal parts glaze and cream-colored paint (slightly darker than the walls) and a splash of water.
  3. Separate newspaper into rectangular pieces roughly the same size of stone blocks and crumple each piece into a ball.
  4. Apply the glaze and paint mixture to the wall with a paint pad, working in sections about the size of two rectangular blocks.
  5. Uncrumple a paper rectangle and smooth onto the wall. Lift off and discard. Smooth another paper rectangle onto the wall, being sure to leave a grout line between the two.
  6. Continue spreading the mixture and smoothing the paper onto the wall to create the faux stones on each wall.

Tips:

  • Use a level to help keep each row straight.
  • A separate rectangular piece of paper is needed for each block so prepare enough paper before you begin the project.
  • Stagger the grout lines as you work on each row.
  • Use the palm of your hand to spread out the paper so you don't leave fingerprints.
