Renovated Colonial-Style Kitchen
Kitchen Design : Episode KDE-1112 -- More Projects »
Host Joan Kohn visits Christine Oliver, who dramatically renovated the dark, colonial style kitchen of her 7,000 square foot home situated on 12 wooded acres. Oliver wanted to lighten the look or the room, so she chose light colored cabinetry, floors and counters. The goal was to create an Old World, family atmosphere in the combined kitchen and sitting room.
- The large granite-topped island has two porcelain sinks and a two-drawer dishwasher with cabinetry panels. Scroll details on the wood and barstools add an ornamental flourish.
- Ample storage was a priority. An appliance garage, topped by an open dish rack, provides concealed storage. A small butlers pantry, which connects the dining room and kitchen, provides even more storage.
- The butlers pantry has a sink, granite countertops, interior-lit cabinetry, mirror backsplash, a dishwasher and locked liquor cabinet.
- The stove area is the rooms focal point. The cooktop was pushed out from the wall three inches, creating an interesting jut in the counter as well as room for a shelf in back of the cooker. The large hand-carved hood has an arch that softens its monolithic presence.
- A niche for the phone was built in on one end of the kitchen, and a more substantial desk area is located at the other end.
- Two large chandeliers provide task lighting over the island, while recessed cans and under-counter lighting light the rest of the areas.
