A large island and banks of windows make this 100-year-old renovated kitchen bright and functional.
Host Joan Kohn visits the renovated 100-year-old shingle style summer cottage that is home for Carolyn Lackey and her family. The kitchen, which had been added to haphazardly over the years, needed to be opened up and brightened. Designer Darin Mardock removed partitions and a back stairwell to create a large, square room that maintains the simple, clean lines of the original home.
  • The color palette for the room is bright and cheerful: soft yellow walls accent white painted cabinets and jet black slate counters. The wide plank wood floors add warmth and a period feel.
  • Several banks of unusual six-over-two double-hung period windows flood the large room with light.
  • Simple, clean lines distinguish the room. Cabinets are Shaker style with no ornamentation.
  • The butcher block island, which has the look of a piece of furniture, is a large square that echoes the shape of the room and separates the work area from the eating area.
  • A wet bar, which includes a second dishwasher and dinnerware storage, draws people into the kitchen without bringing them directly into the work area. Sliding glass panel doors are used on the upper cabinets. Full extension drawers are used under the counter, and ornate brass pulls dress up the look of the area.
  • The large oven and refrigerator/freezer are stainless steel. The unusual refrigerator has a glass door and two drawers on the refrigerator side.
  • A quarter-sawn oak armoire was built in to replace the storage provided by a pantry that was eliminated in the renovation.
