Sophisticated Shabby Chic Living Room
Design on a Dime : Episode DOD-110 -- More Projects »
Toni Gallagher has lived in her current apartment for over ten years. Her career keeps her on the go, leaving her apartment neglected. She feels like her living room still has a post-collegiate feel and she's ready for something more grown-up.
The DilemmaSam Kivett outlines the problems in the room. He gets a sense for her casual style by reviewing the recently purchased sofa; he also notices a few painted wood pieces that can stay in the room. Her forgotten faux fireplace could be a focal point, but it's white and lifeless at the moment. The plentiful windows should be an asset but they are dressed with unattractive mini-blinds. A large open space by the entry door needs visual interest. Her cracked and damaged walls may not react well to a paint roller so Kivett must come up with a cost effective alternative.
The SolutionHere's how Gallagher's neglected living room is turned around with a casual, shabby chic style:
- Design coordinator Summer Baltzer disguises the cracks in the walls with an Italian freso-style paint treatment. Yellow paint is combined with glaze and wiped on the walls until the desired depth is achieved.
The faux fireplace becomes a focal point with layers of empty frames stacked on the mantel and a mirror and candle display in the space where the firebox should be. A piece of mirror is cut to fit inside the firebox and risers are constructed to hold two rows of candles. The chipped tile in front is camouflaged with a maroon and black paint/glaze mixture.
Design coordinator Charles Burbridge gets creative with a pair of custom corbels. The basic shapes are cut at a local lumberyard for about $10 each. Next, the design is routed out on each side, the pieces are chiseled out and the edges are softened with a craft knife and small sander. The surface is distressed with a steel brush and stone and painted. The corbels support a wall shelf that provides a place to set keys and mail. Wrought-iron wall sconces flank the mirror above the shelf and bring in additional lighting.A new area rug helps to tie all the colors together and ground the furniture arrangement.Sheer window dressings on wrought-iron rods soften the look of the mini-blinds without blocking out the natural light.
