Functional and Funky Loft

Design on a Dime : Episode DOD-109 -- More Projects »
Amy Grant and Rob Ahlers recently moved into a large loft. Planning their wedding has left them little time to decorate. They love the airy feeling that loft living provides, as well as the funky features like polished cement floors and exposed pipes. Though they want the space to have a nice flow, they also want to define spaces for the loft's separate functions: living room, dining room and office.

The Dilemma

Host Sam Kivett outlines the problem areas in Rob and Amy's loft: lack of color, bare 11-foot walls, absence of lighting, lack of storage and a cluttered office area.

The Solution

  • A horizontal lime green stripe is painted four feet off the ground to bring the eyeline down. A chalk line is snapped on the wall to ensure the stripe is straight.

  • Design coordinator Summer Baltzer creates large-scale wall art with fabric and a wooden frame from an art supply store. She cuts the fabric to size, stretches it over the frame and staples in place.

  • New open storage pieces help to separate the space while providing a place to display accessories.

  • Ambiant lighting is brought in with clip lights attached to the storage pieces.

  • Kivett creates a partition for the office area out of PVC pipes and sheer drapes. He secures each piece with drywall screws. The sheer panels divide the space and also allow light to filter in.

  • Design coordinator Charles Burbridge constructs a striking piece of textural wall art for the dining room. He cuts 10 particleboard squares and attaches various materials to each, including carpet, cork tiles and a license plate. The squares are secured with a black-painted wood grid created out of 1x2s to make it look like it's floating on the wall.
