Modern Spanish Master Bedroom
Design on a Dime : Episode DOD-108 -- More Projects »
Jim Bird is an animator originally from Britain who recently purchased his first home. His hectic schedule leaves him little time to decorate. He appreciates contemporary furniture but also admires Spanish-style pieces that match the architecture of his home. He wants to add personality to his bedroom that now is just a white box.
The DilemmaSam Kivett outlines the problems in the room, which include: deciding what pieces should stay and go, a need for color, more substantial window treatments, lighting and blending his eclectic tastes.
The SolutionHere's how they add Spanish style to Jim Bird's white-box bedroom:
- The walls are painted a terra-cotta color.
White lampshades are dressed up with paint. Kivett sprays on a base coat of red in a random pattern and, with a sea sponge, stipples on a rust color, then black. The paint technique adds visual interest and texture to ordinary lampshades and better blends in with the wrought-iron bases.
Four matching iron pieces are welded together with a rosette in the center to make a piece of unique wall art. The piece is cleaned with a degreaser/antioxidant, then painted with an anti-rust paint.
The window rod is positioned out from the window casing to give the illusion of a larger window. Striped panels are attached to the rod with clip rings.
Kivett personalizes the glass top of a flea market table with Con-Tact paper and paint. He cuts Bird's initials out of a round piece of Con-Tact paper and adheres it the underside. He paints the underside red and when dry, removes the paper and paints the circle gray.A rich green corduroy duvet cover and colorful rug are perfect accents to the polished look of the room.
