Asian-Themed Bachelor Pad

Design on a Dime : Episode DOD-104 -- More Projects »
Mark Dragin is living in the first place he can call his very own. With no one to help decorate and a tight budget, his living room is empty and bland. He wants an Asian-themed room in which he can be proud to entertain guests.

The Dilemma

Sam Kivett details the problems in the room: a need for additional seating, deep green carpeting, insufficient lighting, a lack of color and missing window treatments.

The Solution

  • One wall is painted a deep cinnabar red; two other walls are painted a tan suede color. The tan color provides a serene earthtone backdrop that sets off the bold red.

  • Kivett creates a bamboo structure to hold the light fixture that becomes the room's main light source. He uses twine to hold the bamboo poles together and affixes sockets to hang at varying heights. Paper lanterns are used as shades. The entire piece is secured to the ceiling with plant hooks.

  • Design coordinator Charles Burbridge devises a loose room divider made of more bamboo poles. He drills holes into a large beam at random angles with a paddle drill bit roughly the same diameter of the bamboo. The bamboo poles are inserted into the holes to create an organic, see-through divider.

  • Design coordinator Summer Baltzer comes up with a creative solution for covering Dragin's green carpet. She pieces together four rush mats on the back with double-sided carpet tape. When flipped over, it looks like one large area rug, which successfully hides the green carpet and reinforces the Asian design.

  • A new entertainment center is placed underneath the window, hiding his audio/video clutter but not his view.

  • Two low stools and pillows covered in luxurious silk fabrics provide additional seating.

  • Other elements that bring in the Asian influence include new paper window shades, pottery pieces and unique wall hangings.
