The Dilemma

Host Sam Kivett and his design team of Summer Baltzer and Charles Burbridge get a grasp of the issues, which include the need to add color, storage, draperies, drama to an undressed window seat and updated furniture.

The Solution

Here's how the room goes from uninspiring to unbelievable:

  • The walls are painted a pale green to set the backdrop for the Old World look. A darker shade of green is painted on the cabinets for extra punch. This is a great way to add dimension to a limited space.

  • A new tufted headboard is created out of particleboard, foam, batting and fabric. The shape is cut with a saw and the buttonholes for the tufting element are marked with a pencil. Once marked, a small hole is drilled in the center of each. The wood shape is covered with 1/2-inch foam, batting and a fabric with leaf detail and stapled on the back side. The buttons are covered with the same fabric and thread through the pre-drilled holes from the front.
  • The nightstands are dressed up with a stencil on the drawer fronts. Burbridge creates a custom stencil to coordinate with the acanthus leaf motif seen throughout Doug and Weni's home.

  • An elegant canopy is created out of a dark coral fabric. Two rod pockets are sewn for the flush-mount drapery hardware, which secures it to the wall and ceiling. Beaded trim accents the front.

  • A luxurious deep purple fabric is used for the window treatment and window seat. A long skirt hides storage underneath the bench.

  • Weni's knotty-pine dresser is updated with paint and the leaf stencil.

  • Additional storage is brought in through the armoire. The TV rests on one shelf and below it a closet rod provides room for Doug's clothes. It receives the same paint and stencil treatment as the dresser.
