Custom Stencils

Decorating Cents : Episode DCT-1701 -- More Projects »
Designer Kimberly Wahl shares tips on how to make personalized stencils.

  • Take the image to a copy center and enlarge/scale down as appropriate for your project. Anything can be copied, including images found on fabrics. Once copied, trace the design onto a sheet of Mylar.
  • There are several different ways to cut out the stencil. A utility blade works well on designs with straight lines and cuticle scissors get the job done on curved images.
  • If you have a lot of cutting to do, a hot stencil knife is probably the best tool to use. The tool is specifically designed for cutting the Mylar and does not get as hot as a woodburning tool. Place the Mylar on a piece of glass before cutting. Hot stencil knives are available through various stencil suppliers, in stores and online, and usually cost around $25. More sources can also be found in the classifieds section in the back of paint and decorating magazines.
