Many of today's modern houses feature large kitchens. But if you live in a small, older home, you're most likely doing your cooking within a limited space. Here's how designer Jill Elliot solved that problem in her 1930s kitchen:

  • She matched the chrome on the old farmhouse sink with flea-market silver drawer pulls, a stainless-steel restaurant work table and a chrome baker's rack. Bringing more metal surfaces into the space helps to reflect the light and open up the room.

  • She used light colors throughout to enlarge the space. The walls are a light green to match the original floor and the cabinets are creamy white.

  • She took advantage of the vertical space with a large hanging pot rack above the island and a grouping of silver plates and trays high on the wall to coordinate the theme.
