A tall dresser offers storage but is not in keeping with the modern look of an Adam Tihany space.

Simple window shades and a corner chair offer a restful and clean view of the room upon entering.
At only 200 square feet, this attic bedroom has dormered walls, large-scale furniture and a king-sized bed, which give it a cramped feeling. Interior designer Kevin Burns sees a lot of potential and uses the guiding principles of architect/designer Adam Tihany to decide the core elements of the room:

  • Burns believes the best way to start is to clear everything out and begin from scratch, which Tihany would agree with. A fresh coat of white paint brightens the room.

  • Burns selects modern yet simple furniture in light woods to replace the older traditional pieces. He begins with a low platform bed, which makes the room seem higher and places a sisal carpet bound in black leather below it.

  • Two nightstands and a dresser are chosen in keeping with Tihany's idea of a uniform look while a simple slip-covered chair in creamy white creates a small seating area in a corner.

  • Some of the most effective changes in this bedroom are simple such as replacing the frilly cotton curtains with modern canvas shades. Another easy yet dramatic change is the bedding--by replacing the dark comforter with a luxurious pinstriped duvet cover and oversized pillows, the room instantly feels larger.

  • Using Adam Tihany's integrated design approach, every element in the room should somehow tie together. In this space, simple things like the dark wood lamp bases resemble the border of the sisal carpeting.

  • Orange throw pillows and a stool covered in orange ultra suede bring color into the room while prints with shades of orange, pink and yellow tie it all together. Tiger lilies are the final touch because as Adam Tihany says, starting with a neutral color palette allows one to bring in colorful accessories.
