A collection of candles was used to choose the various colors found in this unusual paint technique.
Materials:

satin latex paint (Mixed Berries SW1559 (base coat), Amish Yellow SW1372, Mini Yellow SW1374, Cinnamon Stick SW1342)
latex glaze (Creamy SW7012)
foam brushes and roller cover
plastic putty knife

Steps:

1. Paint the walls in the base coat color and let dry (apply two coats if necessary).

2. Fill a foam brush with Cinnamon Stick so it drips along the edge of the blade (figure A). Place the painted edge of the blade flat on the wall and pull it down at a normal speed to spread the paint on the wall (you may be able to complete two swipes before having to reload). Cover about half of the base coat with the first color, which leaves room for the remaining colors (figure B). By the time you make your way around the room, the first wall will be dry. Clean the putty knife.
3. Add Amish Yellow as above, filling in the walls randomly to achieve an irregular but balanced appearance. Clean the putty knife.

4. The third color (Mini Yellow), which should be the lightest one, is the toner color (figure C). Use this to soften the darker shades that have come before it. You may find that you use more of this color than any of the others to lighten the overall appearance.
5. If the technique is still a bit too bold, soften it using glaze (this works for any technique that's too strong). Dilute the glaze as desired (the more water, the more translucent the glaze will be). The featured project used 1/4 cup to measure a mixture of six parts glaze, two parts water and two parts paint. Apply it with a foam roller and cover the entire wall technique to soften the colors. Let dry.
