Refurbish nicked, scratched and worn wood trim with stain and wood filler.
Materials:

stain color card
220-grit sandpaper
putty knife
wood filler compound
stain
polyurethane
foam brushes
rags
tack cloth

Steps:

1. Pick up a stain color card from a local home center store and match one to the current woodwork (if an exact match isn't possible, at least stay in the same color family).
2. Use a putty knife to gently scrape any loose stain or paint drips from the trim. Once the big stuff is removed, sand the badly damaged areas (a few passes over each area is enough as the goal is to open up the old wood pores to accept new stain).

3. Fill any nail or screw holes plus gouges with wood filler compound (build-up the compound 1/16 inch). Once dry, sand the compound and the entire trim surface so the stain will be more consistent. Remove the dust with a tack cloth or damp rag. Be sure to rub your hand across the wood trim to check for gummy areas.
4. Apply the stain as directed and let it dry overnight (figure A). Apply a protective coat of polyurethane and let dry.
