Starting out in the "real world" can be a daunting task for many young adults and designing their first "real" home or apartment on a budget can be challenging. Country Home magazine's Mary Emmerling has ideas for creating a country look that is affordable, functional and youthful.

  • The room is wrapped in a soft aqua wallpaper with just a hint of pattern for a vintage touch.

  • Furnishings include a rattan sofa piled with pillows in floral, stripe and checked fabrics, a wicker coffee table and suitcases stacked for a side table. The sofa is less expensive than an upholstered piece and can be moved to a sunroom or porch later on. The coffee table and suitcases provide extra storage and add a natural, textural feel to the room.

  • A large walnut cabinet on the far wall is a bit more formal but still works with the relaxed look. The polished finish and straight lines contrast with other casual elements.

  • Black and white framed prints and mix-and-match glasses used as candleholders adorn the mantel. The centerpiece is a wire urn filled to the brim with photographs. It provides a stylish place to store them and is an easy way to get everyone talking during parties when one is pulled out and passed around. Another idea is to place a bowl filled with vintage toys on a side table.

  • A crystal-covered chandelier helps to inject some personality into a space.

  • Other inexpensive decorating ideas include no-fuss sheer window shades, candle groupings and all kinds of baskets to store papers, blankets and magazines.
